Session - 26 - Racing the Dusk

Updated: Jan 16

I used Undertake a Journey for the run through the woods, however, it was odd that Kiah's supply track was reduced to zero in one day. Granted, they did feed Shush, a lot. The track enabled multiple things to happen, which I wanted.

The siblings were at Long Wick's gate at the crack of dawn. They wore the forest green clothes that Bear Woman had provided them.

Taylah Apple Soul and Bear Woman were there to see them off.

"With luck," stated the overseer, "you'll reach Thorn Land before the sun sets."

"Glush won't intrude in Raven Father's territory?" asked Kiah.

Apple Soul shrugged, "I think so, but there's no way to be sure. Gods be with you."

Song Hood grinned and curtsied to both of them. Gruff waved. Shush, their white wyvern, let out a cry and flew off ahead of them.

Taylah shot a side-eye at Kiah.

"It's okay," the Bright Woman said cheerfully, "she'll keep an eye out for us while we go along."

They moved at a swift march away from the town. As they did so, Shush flew around them, occasionally resting on a large branch, staring down at Kiah from time to time.

About an hour into their trek, the winged one noticed something else and darted downwards in a flash. A yipe of pain echoed from the woods, and the siblings watched, in astonishment as the wyvern lifted a grey wolf out from the brush and took them into the sky. A moment later the beast fell with a snap of branches and a brutal thud.

"There's one of Glush's spies gone," commented Kiah.

Gruff nodded.

The Wyvern landed beside them and Song Hood scritched her appreciatively and gave her jerky.

The siblings continued their journey at a quick pace as they moved deeper into the woods. About three hours later, they stopped to share a meal. Gruff tossed some more jerky to Shush.

Song Hood quickly glanced up at the sun twinkling through the spring bulbs and suddenly slapped her forehead.

Gruff eyed her.

"We're going the wrong way," she moaned. "We're going to need to run if we'll reach Thorn Land before sunset.

The siblings rushed through the woods, weaving, and ducking roots and trees.

As frustrating as the ridge that rose before them was, both Kiah and Gruff were grateful for a chance to catch their breath.

"W-wonderful." Kiah huffed, starting at the three-story rock face before them.

A thoughtful look crossed Gruff's face. Suddenly he grinned, pulled out rope and tied it to some salted meat from his pack, and started to twirl it.

Song Hood blinked at him as if he lost his mind.

Gruff tossed the treat up, Shush flew and caught it. With two wing flaps, she was up the cliff face with it and started munching her prize happily.

Foe Slayer grasped the rope and quickly started to climb. Shush, growled playfully and pulled the treat back, which in turn lifted the warrior to the top of the cliff. He then cut the rope and held his end gesturing for Kiah to come on up.

Kiah stared at the smirking face of her brother, slack-jawed.

His grin winded and he gestured again.

Song Hood shook her head, and made for the rope"I really, need to get to know my wyvern better."

Once at the top of the cliff, the siblings once again raced between the trees. Shush flew along, seeming more and more out of sorts as the sun began its downward journey.

The dimming of the light drove Kiah and Gruff to push themselves until their lungs were on fire. Meanwhile, Shush flew off so quickly, she could no longer be seen.

When the world became orange, Kiah shouted, "We need to hurry!" After a gasp, "We can't be in the forest when Glush awakes."

Suddenly, she tripped and fell, face-first into the muck. Her brother skidded to a halt.

A spidery voice called out, "Greetings, Kiah Song Hood, welcome to my domain."

They looked up and saw an impossibly tall man with a long pale face, and pointed ears. He was wrapped in bog moss. His eyes were hollow.

He frowned, "You summoned my ravens, in retaliation Glush had them slain. Please explain why."
