Session 30 - A Rainy Day Pause

Updated: Mar 5

I'm breaking these sessions up as feels natural.

True, not a lot happened here, but I think these moments help build character.

Before setting up camp, Kia closed her eyes and hummed an eerie tune.

[Secure Advantage: Strong Hit]

The air shimmered, as if in a heat ripple.

Kiah opened her eyes and smiled. To Gruff she said, "I've cloaked us in magic. We should be able to set up camp, and stay the night without Glush finding us."

Gruff nodded. Shush, the white wyvern, churred.

The siblings quickly gathered firewood. While doing so, Song Hood let out a gasp.

Her brother rushed over.

Kiah was practically dancing, "Look," she said with childhood joy. "Moon berries."

The silver berries shone like pearls. Both siblings reverently gathered them up.

They set up a fire, and all three, brother, sister, and wyvern, cuddled up to eat the sweet berries and look up at the stars.

"The last time we had these was with mother." Kiah sighed.

Gruff wiped away a tear.

"I know," stated Song Hood, "but, we can still cherish the good memories we have of her." She popped a berry in her mouth. Kiah remembered her words, 'Why do you look surprised? I'm your mother, I know these are your favorite.'

"Thanks, Mom," the skald whispered.

The siblings woke up to rain. The wind whipped past them, and in the distance, they could hear thunder.

Both frowned up at the rolling clouds. A boom rumbled in the distance.

Gruff grabbed his sister by the shoulder and pointed to a lower area of the woods. Kiah nodded, and the two gathered their gear and fled.

They reached a depression in the ground. Their hoods were pulled up, and rain poured down.

The wyvern was still in the original campsite, trembling.

"Shush!" Kiah called, "Come here. Over here!" she patted the ground before them.

The wyvern darted down and curled up under the siblings. They lifted their cloaks to shield her from the storm.

Eventually, the storm spent its strength and revealed the warm, noonday sun.

Kiah stroked Shush's head while Gruff hung up their cloaks.

When the wyvern had regained her courage, she clambered up to sun herself in a clearing.

Kiah and Gruff then changed into dry clothes.

Later that afternoon, Foe Slayer struck off with Shush to hunt.

Back at camp Kiah laid a series of stones in a circle, sat in its center, and sang out praises to the Forest Mother.

The forest quieted and Song Hood felt the eye of the forest upon her. After a tense pause, magic flooded into her.

Kiah stood with a sigh. Feeling fully prepared for the night to come.
